Artist and Educator
Visual Art for the Classroom (VACs)
Mary has developed a wide range of visual aids for the classroom throughout her studies in NCAD. These resources support clear instruction, student engagement, and inclusive learning, and are informed by her experience in school placement, workshops, and subject-specific training across a variety of art and design processes.
Mixed Media VAC
This Visual Art for the Classroom project explored mixed media techniques through the construction of a large-scale sculptural slice of pumpkin pie. Using a variety of materials, Mary investigated texture, layering, and form. The project supported her development in teaching mixed media approaches that encourage playful experimentation, material exploration, and student engagement.
3D Construction VAC
In this Visual Art for the Classroom project, Mary explored three-dimensional construction through the creation of a life-size cardboard shoe based on the theme The Cardboard Cobbler. The project focused on structure, scale, and problem-solving using recycled materials. This work supported her ability to guide students through complex construction processes while encouraging creativity, experimentation, and sustainable material use.
Bauhaus Design VAC
Mary completed a design-based Visual Art for the Classroom project inspired by the Bauhaus movement. She created a poster centred on a selected design principle and explored a range of design techniques, including balance, repetition, and the illusion of movement using paper circles. This project strengthened her understanding of visual communication and design principles, supporting her ability to teach both the practical and conceptual aspects of design in the classroom.
Lino Print VAC
Mary developed a series of lino printing visual aids focused on mark making and texture. Working at A5 scale, she produced prints using black ink on a range of coloured papers and created reference samples demonstrating sixteen different cuts and marks across two A6 practice lino blocks. This project supported her understanding of how to teach lino cutting techniques clearly and effectively, helping students recognise how different tools and cuts influence print outcomes.
