Teaching Practice

"Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel" - Socrates

Philosophy of Teaching Statement

I believe that students learn best in environments where they feel safe, respected, and supported. One of my lecturers once described the art classroom as a “hare’s corner”—an old Irish farming term for an awkward, uncultivated patch of land left for nature to grow freely—and this idea strongly resonates with my own teaching philosophy. I view the art room as a space that should be calm yet alive, structured yet open, and free enough to allow students to take creative risks. When students feel comfortable making mistakes and expressing themselves, meaningful learning can take place.

I see teaching as a reflective and evolving practice, shaped by experience, observation, and ongoing professional learning. Reflection allows me to respond thoughtfully to students’ needs, adapt my teaching strategies, and continuously improve my practice. I value creating strong relationships with students, built on trust and clear communication, and I strive to maintain high expectations while remaining patient and empathetic. Through reflection, I aim to balance guidance with independence, supporting students as they develop confidence in their own abilities and ideas.

Inclusivity and student voice are central to my approach to teaching. I believe that every student deserves to feel seen, valued, and capable, regardless of confidence level, ability, or background. In my practice, I am particularly mindful of creating opportunities for quieter students and those who may need additional encouragement to participate and take ownership of their learning. By fostering an inclusive classroom culture and remaining attentive to the hidden curriculum, I aim to create a learning environment that empowers students not only as learners, but as individuals.
